Today, I'm talking about one thing and it's not the only thing, but it is one thing that could be stopping you from actually losing weight.
And it's going to be super simple, something it's one word and it's overwhelm. And I know you're thinking what, that's not what I was expecting. I thought you were going to tell me something, some complicated thing. That's going to be the magic pill or something like that. But there's obviously there's not, there's no magic pill out there, but whenever we overcome an obstacle, an obstacle like overwhelm, it can feel like a magic pill because the overwhelm that you're experiencing right now from just getting, going from just getting started is holding you back. So really it's just the getting started. That is, that is so overwhelming. And I think that a lot of people, when they think about, okay, I want to start losing weight. And then we start looking for a diet. We go on online and it's like, what's the best diet to lose weight quickly.
And everything's about doing it fast, as fast as possible. I'm going to try this diet and it's going to, I'm going to lose 20 pounds in one month and it causes us to be overwhelmed because then it's okay. Wait, what can I really do that? Is that really possible? But wait, it's gotta be complicated, right? It has to be complicated or it's not going to work. And I think that's what the underlying belief system that we have is that if it's not complicated, it's not going to work, but complicated diets and complicated ways of eating with all of these and all of these stipulations and taking all of the food away that you love that is causing overwhelm and so much overwhelm that you don't even get started in the, in the beginning. You don't even get started in the first place. So you're just, it's a self fulfilling or self-sabotage right out of the gate, you are wanting to lose weight.
And you're thinking, this is just this so complicated. I just can't do this. This is so complicated. So you're feeling overwhelmed. And then you don't start the diet. You don't, um, you don't get started and you don't lose weight, but what if we could do away with that overwhelm? Because really it's just a feeling. It's just something that we feel and that overwhelm is coming from something that we think. So when you think I can't do this, this is too hard. You're going to feel overwhelmed, but what if it's not overwhelming? What if you stopped making it? So overwhelming, stop trying to do so many things to lose weight. We need to change the narrative from, and the, you know, the diet industry does not like this, of course, because it's supposed to be complicated. If it wasn't complicated, then you know, it's not going to work, but it's not complicated.
And making it complicated makes us overwhelmed. So we don't do anything. We do nothing. And what I'm telling you is quit making it so complicated. Keto doesn't have to be complicated. It doesn't have to be where you go on Pinterest and you search for a million recipes. And, and my recipes fall into that, to that boat. But a lot of recipes out there are so complicated, so many steps in, and then we say, Oh, you know, I think I'm going to make Oreo cookies. Let me see if there's a recipe for keto Oreo cookies. And then you look at the recipe and you're like, Oh my gosh, it's got 20 ingredients. If I, when I go and then you go and buy the ingredients and it was $30. And then you, it takes you two hours to make them, and then you've made them and it, and it made what 12 Oreos.
Now I don't know about you, but I think it's a lot easier to just go buy a pack of Oreos than it is to make them yourself. And your brain is like, this just makes no sense. Why would I make these Oreos when I can just go buy them off the shelf, be a whole lot cheaper, a whole lot less effort. Let's do that. Let's go. And we'll just, you know, we're not forget this keto stuff. It's too complicated. It's too overwhelming. We can't do this. I'm just going to go by the Oreos. But what I'm trying to tell you is these recipes can be very complicated. If you choose really complicated recipes, choose recipes, choose what I like to do when I'm developing a recipe is I look at something and I'm like, okay, how can I take away as many ingredients from this recipe as possible?
And it still tastes amazing. That's how I develop recipes. So I do get a lot of comments from people it's like, wow, your recipes are so easy, but still delicious. And really that's music to my ears because that's exactly what I'm going for. I do not like complicated recipes. I don't like complicated diet rules. So for keto and I, that's why I kind of like consider myself the voice of reason in keto, because there's so many rules out there that makes it so complicated. So overwhelming that you just don't want to even start. So why do we do that to ourselves? Well, first of all, we're listening to all of these experts. Who's giving us all of these rules and you can't have this and you can't eat this and no, you can't do that. And you have to do this. You have to intermittent fast.
You have to, um, do all of these things. You can't eat a piece of bread and you can't, you know, it's just ridiculous, um, amount of rules, the sheer number of rules. And you have to watch all of the ingredients on all of the food that you eat. And it's like slow down. Yes. Maybe in the future a year from now, after you're really successful with keto. And then you want to start looking at how can I more improve my diet overall. Maybe I would like to stop eating as many chemicals or things that you know, shouldn't be in food. Maybe, maybe then I'll start looking at that stuff. But let me, let's just get into keto. Let's just get in there and start having success with it first. And let it be an individual decision on whether or not you want to make that roll your own or not.
I like the least amount of rules as possible. So for me, in my definition of keto is if it fits in your macros, guess what? It's keto. If it fits within your, your, your individual carb limit, then it's keto for you. To me, for me, that's about 25 net carbs. If it fits in that 25 net car range, it's keto for me. So if one day I want to eat a piece of bread and it fits in that 25 net carbs. That day, that bread is keto. If I want to eat a little cookie on my yogurt, cause I do, I have a little cookie on my yogurt every single day. It's like five carbs. I fit it into my carbs. I'm not going to be overly dogmatic about stuff. This is exactly the type of stuff that I teach in my membership because ultimately it all starts with the overwhelm.
I get this question a million times. I just don't know how to start. I just don't know how to get started with keto. It's all, it's just so complicated. And it's complicated because there's so many people out there shouting at you on, you have to do it this way. It's got to be perfect. You can't have this, you can't have that. So then you don't want to do anything because you're so confused. It's just so overwhelming. It's all about keeping it simple. So how do we keep it simple? You have to choose the food. That's right for you. Not what's right for someone else not what's right for a, um, person on Instagram that weighs 120 pounds. Who's never been overweight a day in their life. You have to choose what's right for you. You have to eat the food that you like. You have to eat the food that, that is delicious.
And back with the, going back to the keto recipes and the keto. Like I, I've never, honestly, I've never made an Oreo Kita Oreo recipe. I've never made that. I'm sure there's one out there. I've never even searched for A keto Oreo recipe, but I'm sure there's one out there. And I guarantee you, it's complicated. Just thinking about having to make your own Oreo sounds really complicated. I'm not even going to try it. I'm not even going to try it. So I just don't make any, I just don't eat Oreos. You know, I just don't eat them. So, and some people might think, Oh well, you're depriving yourself of Oreos. And that's really a whole other, um, podcast episode. I'll have to go. I'll have to go into detail on that next week. But what I'll say about that is what are you depriving yourself of by eating those Oreos?
Because there's always going to be another side. Yes, you are depriving yourself of Oreos. But in turn, when you eat those Oreos, what are you depriving yourself up? That's the question I'll pose for you. I will go over that. That'll be a great podcast episode for next week because you're going to be depriving yourself of something you are going to be describing yourself of, um, clear thinking. Just depends on what happens when you eat Oreos. When you eat anything. I always talk about Oreos on this podcast. I don't know why. I guess it's like the most recognized junk food out there. And my kids love them. We don't buy them, but my kids love them. Of course who wouldn't. I mean, they are the epitome of dopamine hit. Honestly, they are the, they are the epitome of food manufacturer to make you want more and more and more.
And you could literally eat an entire sleeve of Oreos. That's exactly how they were designed. They were designed to be so delicious that you can sit there and eat all of them and not even blink an eye. It's exactly how they were designed. So we have to question when we eat that food, what we're depriving ourselves of. So I'll talk about that next week. But anyway, back to overwhelm, whenever you are trying something new, your brain loves to be overwhelmed. It's inherent. It is something that is human nature. So it's just always something that you want to notice. Notice your brain getting overwhelmed when you're trying something new you're then you'll start to look for a lot of evidence on it being complicated. Oh, let me go and search out all of these recipes. I'm going to go look on Instagram. And of course the only people who post their recipes on Instagram post the most amazing pictures.
And then it's so complicated. It's got 20 ingredients and click you're overwhelmed. It's like a light switch comes on. Overwhelm the overwhelm light switch. You just flip the switch and your brain loves it. Your brain absolutely loves it. It's like, okay, brain, I'm onto you. I know what you're doing. I know that you just want me to just lay around and be lazy and eat Oreos and watch Netflix and not lose weight. You don't want me to get up off the couch. You don't want me to find an easy recipe. One of Jennifer's recipes will be super easy brain. You don't want me to do that. You don't want me to go searching for this easy recipe and make it in 30 minutes and then put it into six bowls. And congratulations. You've just made lunch for the next six days. And it was super easy, not overwhelming.
But then what? Then you're going to think you're deprived because you have to eat the same lunch every day for six days. We're going to talk about that next week, because then again, what are you depriving yourself of by having all of that variety? Because I can guarantee you right now, right now, you are not eating variety. You think you are. You think that you're eating variety, but I'm con I'm going to tell you that you're not eating variety right now. You think you are, but you're not. Anyway. The takeaway, the takeaway from this episode is notice your brain first, stop making it complicated. Stop making keto complicated, find you a breakfast recipe, find you a lunch recipe that you like find you a couple of dinner recipes, make them on repeat. It's really that simple stop trying to find a zillion recipes out there that are super complicated.
Don't try and make keto Oreos go to Jennifer banz.com. All of my recipes are super easy. Most of the dinners are 30 minutes or less. So yeah, that's the step one. Stop letting it get overwhelming. Stop looking for evidence of overwhelm of how it's easy. I mean, I'm sorry. Not evidence of not how it's easy, how it's going to be so hard. It's going to be so hard to find something that I like. And all of these recipes are so overwhelming. Stop doing that to yourself. You are doing that to yourself, making it overwhelming. Stop listening to all of these people out there who are telling you that if you want to lose weight, you need to put Apple cider vinegar in your water. That is fricking stupid. No Apple cider vinegar in your water is not going to burn fat. It might take the enamel off of your teeth, but it's not going to burn fat, but we're looking we're overwhelmed.
So we go looking for this quick fix and we think that it's, you know, Oh wait, maybe I'm not losing weight because I'm having too much salt. No, you're not losing weight because you're eating too much. That's flat out what it is flat out. It's not because you're having too much salt. It's not because you're not drinking enough water. It's not because you don't put Apple cider vinegar in your water. It's not that stuff. It's not because you're not taking fish oil. It's not because you're not taking a multivitamin. It's not because you're not eating, taking ketones. It's none of that. It's because you're eating too much. And you know, when you start to really dive in and find food that you like, and maybe it's going to be a little boring for a little bit, but that's okay because wouldn't, you rather be bored with your food and lose weight, then have variety.
What you think variety is and not lose any weight. So stop listening to all of these people with all of their anecdotes and how, if you do this one little tweak, then you'll start losing weight. No, that's not true. Stop making it hard. Find easy recipes and then just start. That's all you've got to do. So anyway, thank you so much for listening this week and I will come back next week and I already have a topic. It is going to be, what are you depriving yourself of when you are eating off of keto? So talk to you soon. Bye.
