My super easy homemade keto bagels recipe is not made from fathead dough!  This no cheese keto bagel is easy to make and you can toast it, make a sandwich, or just a simple breakfast with some cream cheese... this bagel recipe is it!

keto bagels on plates with cream cheese

I have been resisting making low carb bagels for so long because I didn't just want to make another fathead dough recipe.  I don't have anything against fathead dough, I just like having a no cheese option.

This keto bagel recipe uses psyllium husk in place of cheese for elasticity and as a binder.

    Ingredients and Substitutions

This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for this keto bagel recipe recipe, what each one does in the recipe, and substitution options. For a printable recipe, see the recipe card below.

1 Cup Almond flour (112g) - The base of almost all of my baking recipes are almond flour.  The reason behind this is that almond flour is very consistent in keto baking.  I find that recipes with a majority of coconut flour can be finicky. My favorite almond flour is by Blue Diamond. It is the most finely ground that I have found.

1 Tablespoon Coconut flour (7g) - These keto bagels use just a little coconut flour to help them have a nice texture like traditional bagels.

1 Tablespoon Psyllium husk powder (12g) - This ingredient is commonly used in keto baking as a binder...kind of how the cheese is a binder in so many fat head recipes.  It also gives the keto bagel dough elasticity.

1 teaspoon Baking soda - This reacts with the Greek Yogurt to help our bagels rise.

    ¼ teaspoon salt

2 Large Eggs, beaten - eggs are essential for keto baking!

1 Tablespoon Granular sweetener (12g) - We use just a small amount in this recipe just like traditional bagel and bread recipes. I use Lakanto classic sweetener because it has the best taste, in my opinion.

2 Tablespoons Fat free plain greek yogurt (28g) - This reacts with the baking soda to help the bagels rise!

Everything Bagel Seasoning - for garnish (optional)

no cheese bagel ingredients in glass bowls.

How to make keto bagels without cheese

This section explains how to make this keto bagel recipe step by step. For a full printable recipe, see the recipe card below.

Step 1 - Make the dough.  We need to make our dough by combining all of the dry ingredients, then adding in the wet ingredients.  Your dough will be thick and slightly sticky.

Step 2 - Divide the dough.  Now we need to flatten the keto bagel dough into the bottom of the bowl and cut it into 4 equal portions.

low carb bagel dough cut into 4 sections

Step 3 - Shape the dough into bagels.  Now we need to use wet hands to form each section of the keto bagel dough into a bagel shape by first forming into a tube, then connecting the ends. Place onto prepared baking sheet. Repeat this process with each section.  Top with everything seasoning if you like.

unbaked bagels on a sheet tray

Step 4 - Bake the bagels.  The last step is to bake these low carb bagels in a 400F (176C) oven for 15 minutes then let them cool.

💡Tip: Make a double batch of these low carb bagels and freeze the leftovers for busy mornings.

    Storage and serving instructions

    • Store leftover bagels in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
    • Remove from the refrigerator, split in half with a sharp knife, and toast in the toaster.  Top with cream cheese or your favorite bagel toppings.
    • You can freeze these keto bagels in an airtight freezer safe container for up to 4 months.  Let them thaw before splitting in half and toasting.

    Other keto bagel options

Sometimes we are not in the mood to bake and I totally get it.  There are several options out there now for keto friendly bagels that are really delicious and they are almost all cheese free.  There are some downsides to these manufactured bagels.  Some of them are not gluten free and they are usually pretty pricey.

    • Sola Bagels - These are great because they come in so many different flavors. They are probably the closest to a traditional bagel and they are 6 net carbs.
    • Thin Slim Foods - Another good option, though I haven't tried them.  They are cheaper than the Sola bagels.  They say they are zero net carbs at 14g of total carbs and 14g of fiber.
    • Carbonaut Low Carb Bagels - These seem like a great option because they are gluten free and egg free!  They are 2g net carbs and about the same price as the other bagels.  They do have some negative reviews but most seem to be positive.

    Low Carb Bagel Flavor options

    • Make the bagels plain then spread some cream cheese and my homemade keto strawberry jam on top.
    • Top a plain one with keto chocolate fruit dip.
    • Use these low carb bagels as low carb bread for a sandwich.
    • Before baking, top them with poppy seeds.

What other options are available instead of Almond flour? I’m allergic to all tree nuts and peanuts. Is it possible to use rice or sunflower flour?

That’s a very tasty bagel! I like how it toasted, not to heavy or light. Easy recipe to follow and really good!

Hi Jennifer my question disappeared do I set my oven at 350 or 400 degrees? I see it listed in printable instructions as 350 but in the step by step it says 400. I’m loving your new cookbook! Thank you for all your easy delicious recipes.

Is the psyllium husk absolutely necessary or can it be left out?

I used oat fiber if you have that! They act the same and can be substituted for each other in recipes!
