What This Air Fryer Chicken Breast Tastes Like

This air fryer chicken breast is juicy, tender, and packed with savory flavor from the simple blend of garlic, smoked paprika, onion, and oregano. The outside develops a lightly seasoned crust while the inside stays moist and flavorful. It's mild enough for the whole family to enjoy but seasoned enough that it tastes great on its own, sliced over a salad, or served alongside your favorite side dishes.

    Ingredients You'll Need

I love a well seasoned piece of chicken that is juicy and uses delicious spices! For your cooking convenience, I have listed here the full ingredient list for the best air fryer chicken breast. (The full printable recipe card is toward the bottom of the page.)

ingredients for chicken breast in the air fryer
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1 teaspoon Smoked paprika
    • ½ teaspoon onion powder
    • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
    • ½ teaspoon Kosher salt
    • pepper to taste (if desired)
    • 1 tablespoon (14g) Avocado oil or olive oil
    • 2 Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts, about 1 pound (450g)

    Equipment needed

    • Air Fryer: of course, for an air fryer chicken recipe, you are going to need an air fryer. There are so many different brands out there. There are air fryers that have a basket, and then there are air fryer ovens.
      • Air fryer with a basket: This is probably what comes to mind when you think of an air fryer. There are different capacities, upwards of 10 quarts. They tend to cook food more quickly than conventional ovens and Air fryer ovens.
      • Air fryer oven: This is a multi-function countertop oven that can usually air fry, toast, bake and broil. From my testing, the air fryer oven took a little longer to cook the boneless skinless chicken breasts.
    • Instant-read meat thermometer: If you want to make sure your chicken is perfectly cooked, you really need a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the chicken.

How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Breast

This recipe couldn't be any more simple, but I want to make sure you can make it perfectly every single time. Here I will give you step by step instruction with photos.

    1. Pre-heat the air fryer to 375F (190C): I like to always preheat my air fryer while I am prepping the chicken. Most air fryers have a pre-heat setting which lasts 2-3 minutes, but I never use it and just turn it on the air fry setting for 5 minutes.

    chicken breasts coated in seasonings

    2. Season the chicken: First coat with the avocado oil, then season both sides of the chicken with all of the spices.

    3. Air fry the chicken breasts: Put the chicken breasts in the air fryer basket and air fry at 375 degrees F (190C) for 18-20 minutes (basket air fryers), flipping half-way through. For Air fryer ovens, add a few minutes more. Of course, the cooking time will vary depending on the size of your chicken breast.

    holding a red meat thermometer

    4. Cook to the proper temperature: Pull the chicken breast from the air fryer when it reaches 155F to 160F (68C to 71C) internal temperature using an instant-read thermometer inserted halfway through the thickest part of the meat. Let the chicken rest on a plate for 5-10 minutes before cutting. This "carryover cooking" will bring the chicken up to the safe temperature of 165F (74C).

Carryover cooking, also known as residual heat cooking, is a phenomenon that occurs in food when it continues to cook even after it has been removed from a heat source. This happens because the heat already present in the food continues to transfer to the cooler interior of the food, causing the internal temperature to rise even after it has been taken off the heat.

The result is juicy air fryer chicken breasts without having to turn on the regular oven. In the recipe card, I also give instructions for cooking chicken cutlets which can be finished in half the time.

Air Fryer Chicken Breast Cook Times

Air fryer chicken breast cook times will vary depending on the size and thickness of the chicken. The most reliable way to know when it's done is to use an instant-read thermometer and remove the chicken when it reaches 155°F to 160°F, then let it rest before slicing.

    Approximate cook times at 375°F:

    • Small chicken breasts (5 to 6 ounces): 12 to 15 minutes
    • Medium chicken breasts (7 to 8 ounces): 16 to 18 minutes
    • Large chicken breasts (9 to 12 ounces): 18 to 22 minutes

For even cooking, try to choose chicken breasts that are similar in size. If one piece is much larger than the others, remove the smaller pieces first and continue cooking the larger breast until it reaches the proper temperature.

Tips for Juicy Air Fryer Chicken Breast

Chicken breast has a reputation for being dry, but a few simple tricks will help you get juicy results every time.

    • Preheat the air fryer so the chicken starts cooking immediately.
    • Use chicken breasts that are similar in size for even cooking.
    • Coat the chicken with oil before adding the seasoning to help lock in moisture.
    • Don't overcrowd the air fryer basket. Leave space around each piece for proper air circulation.
    • Use an instant-read thermometer and remove the chicken when it reaches 155°F to 160°F.
    • Let the chicken rest for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing so the juices can redistribute throughout the meat.
    • For very large chicken breasts, pound them to an even thickness before cooking to prevent the thinner parts from drying out.

The biggest mistake people make is overcooking the chicken. Even an extra few minutes can turn a juicy chicken breast into a dry one, so a meat thermometer is the key to perfect results.

Air Fryer Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast

This recipe was specifically developed for boneless skinless chicken breasts, making it one of the easiest ways to cook juicy chicken in the air fryer. Because boneless skinless chicken breasts are naturally lean, they can dry out quickly if overcooked. The air fryer solves that problem by cooking them quickly and evenly while keeping the inside tender and moist.

Whether you're making a quick weeknight dinner or prepping protein for the week, these air fryer boneless skinless chicken breasts are a simple, versatile option. Slice them for salads, use them in casseroles, add them to wraps, or serve them alongside your favorite vegetables for an easy high-protein meal.

Can You Cook Frozen Chicken Breast in the Air Fryer?

Yes, you can cook frozen chicken breast in the air fryer, making it a great option when you forget to thaw dinner. While I prefer starting with thawed chicken breasts for the best seasoning coverage and the most even cooking, frozen chicken breasts work surprisingly well.

To cook frozen chicken breast in the air fryer, preheat the air fryer to 375°F and cook for about 10 minutes. Once the outside has thawed enough, brush with oil, season generously, and continue cooking for another 10 to 15 minutes, or until the thickest part reaches 165°F. Total cook time will vary depending on the size and thickness of the chicken breasts.

As always, use an instant-read thermometer rather than relying solely on cooking times. It's the easiest way to ensure your chicken is cooked through while still staying juicy.

Ways to Use Air Fryer Chicken Breast

One of the best things about air fryer chicken breast is how versatile it is. I often make a batch at the beginning of the week and use it in several different meals.

Here are some of my favorite ways to use it:

    • Slice it over a salad for an easy high-protein lunch.
    • Make chicken salad for meal prep lunches.
    • Add it to soups such as chicken enchilada soup.
    • Use it in casseroles like chicken bacon ranch casserole or chicken and vegetable casserole.
    • Stuff it into lettuce wraps or low carb tortillas.
    • Serve it with roasted vegetables and a side salad for a simple dinner.
    • Dice it and add it to cauliflower rice bowls.
    • Use it as a pizza topping.
    • Serve it with keto gravy and cauliflower mash for a comforting meal.
    • Add it to pasta, rice bowls, or wraps for family members who prefer a higher-carb option.

Because the seasoning is simple and versatile, this chicken works with almost any meal and makes it easy to keep cooked protein on hand throughout the week.

What to Serve With Air Fryer Chicken Breast

Air fryer chicken breast pairs well with almost any side dish, making it an easy option for both weeknight dinners and meal prep. Since the chicken is packed with flavor but not overly heavy, you can keep things simple or build a more substantial meal around it.

For a low carb meal, try serving it with:

    • Cauliflower Mash
    • Roasted Broccoli
    • Air Fryer Green Beans
    • Fried Cabbage with Bacon
    • A Simple Side Salad
    • Keto Gravy

For family members who prefer a higher-carb option, add:

    • Roasted potatoes
    • Rice or rice pilaf
    • Macaroni and cheese
    • Dinner rolls
    • Pasta salad

My favorite comfort-food combination is sliced air fryer chicken breast served with keto gravy and creamy cauliflower mash. It's simple, satisfying, and feels like a complete meal without much extra work.

    Storage and Reheating Instructions

Store leftover air fryer chicken breast in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. It's great for meal prep because it stays tender and can be used in salads, wraps, casseroles, and quick lunches throughout the week.

To freeze, let the chicken cool completely, then place it in a freezer-safe container or freezer bag for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

For the best texture, reheat the chicken in the air fryer at 350°F for 3 to 5 minutes, or until warmed through. You can also reheat it in the microwave in 30-second intervals, but be careful not to overheat it, as chicken breast can dry out quickly.

If you're using the chicken in soups, casseroles, or other recipes, you can add it directly to the dish without reheating it separately.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to flip chicken breast in the air fryer?

I recommend flipping the chicken halfway through cooking to help it cook evenly and develop a nicely seasoned exterior on both sides.

Can I use chicken tenderloins instead?

Yes. Chicken tenderloins work great in the air fryer and cook much faster than full chicken breasts. Start checking for doneness after about 8 minutes.

    Ingredients

    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1 teaspoon Smoked paprika
    • ½ teaspoon onion powder
    • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
    • ½ teaspoon Kosher salt
    • pepper to taste (if desired)
    • 1 tablespoon avocado oil or olive oil
    • 2 Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts, about 1 pound (450g)

    Equipment

    • Meat Thermometer (Click here for my favorite)
    • Air Fryer (Here's the air fryer I like best on Amazon)

    Method

    1. Preheat the air fryer to 375F (190C) for 5 minutes. Combine the seasonings in a small bowl and set aside. With the chicken breasts on a cutting board or plate, coat each piece of chicken with the oil on both sides using a basting brush. Evenly coat both sides of each chicken breast with the seasoning mixture.
    2. Place chicken in the air fryer basket in a single layer (see notes for an air fryer oven). Air fry at 375F (190C) for 18-20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
    3. Pull the chicken breast from the air fryer when it reaches 155F to 160F (68C to 71C) internal temperature using an instant-read thermometer inserted halfway through the thickest part of the meat. Let the chicken breasts rest on a plate for 5-10 minutes before cutting. This carryover cooking will bring the chicken up to the safe temperature of 165F (74C)
Air Fryer Chicken Cutlets (quicker cooking!)
    1. Preheat the air fryer to 375F (190C) for 5 minutes. Combine the seasonings in a small bowl and set aside. Place the chicken breasts on a cutting board and using a sharp knife, cut each breast in half lengthwise, resulting in 4 chicken breast cutlets.
      chicken being sliced in half
    2. Coat both sides of each piece of chicken with the oil using a basting brush. Evenly coat both sides of each chicken breast with the seasoning blend.
    3. Place the seasoned chicken breasts in the air fryer in a single layer and cook at 370F (190C) for 10-15 minutes, flipping at the 4 minute mark.  Check after 8 minutes for doneness with an internal meat thermometer.  Pull the chicken breast from the air fryer when it reaches 155F to 160F (68C to 71C) internal temperature using an instant read thermometer inserted halfway through the thickest part of the meat. Let the chicken rest on a plate for 5-10 minutes before cutting. This carryover cooking will bring the chicken up to the safe temperature of 165F (74C)

    Notes

    • Cook time will vary depending on the size and thickness of your chicken breasts. Always use an instant-read thermometer for the most accurate results.
    • For juicy chicken, remove the breasts from the air fryer when they reach 155°F to 160°F. The temperature will continue to rise as the chicken rests, reaching the safe temperature of 165°F.
    • If your chicken breasts are very thick, you can pound them to an even thickness before seasoning and cooking. This helps them cook more evenly.
    • Chicken cutlets cook much faster than whole chicken breasts. Begin checking for doneness after 8 minutes.
    • Air fryer ovens typically take a few minutes longer to cook chicken breasts than basket-style air fryers.
    • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
    • This recipe is naturally low carb, keto-friendly, gluten free, and perfect for meal prep.

You can defrost your chicken first by putting the frozen chicken into a ziplock bag and letting the chicken soak for 30 min +, flipping the chicken every 20-30 mins to make sure both sides are defrosted and the follow the recipe as directed.
