These air fryer chicken legs are one of those dinners I make on repeat when I need something easy that everyone will eat. Crispy skin, juicy meat, and no extra work…just season, cook, and done.

My Go-To Method for Air Fryer Chicken Legs

I’ve been making air fryer chicken for years, and these chicken legs are one of the easiest versions to get right. The higher fat from the skin helps them crisp up really well without needing anything complicated, which is why they’re such a good option for busy nights.
This is the same simple method I use for my air fryer chicken thighs, just adjusted slightly for drumsticks. Once you get the timing down, it’s one of those recipes you don’t even have to think about anymore. Season it, cook it, and move on with your night.
The seasoning mixture I use on these crispy drumsticks is a family favorite and is what I use on my Air Fryer Whole Chicken. It contains smoked paprika for a little smoky flavor, garlic powder, dried oregano, and onion powder. I truly believe this recipe is better (definitely easier!) than fried chicken.
The air fryer is the best way to cook chicken, whether it be chicken legs, thighs, chicken wings, or chicken breasts. It gives you crunchy chicken skin every time!
Full ingredient list
For your cooking convenience, I have listed here the full ingredient list for perfect air fryer drumsticks. (The full printable recipe card is towards the bottom of this page.)
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon oregano
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- 8 Bone in, skin on, chicken legs
This seasoning has delicious flavor, but you are welcome to use your favorite seasoning if you like. You could also include black pepper or cayenne pepper.
How I make air fryer chicken legs
In about 30 minutes cooking time, you will have crispy chicken legs with minimal effort. Let me show you how, step by step with photos.

- Combine the seasonings in a small bowl and pre-heat the air fryer to 380F. Add 8 chicken drumsticks to a large zip top bag or a large bowl. Pour the seasonings over the chicken legs and toss to coat. Either zip up the bag and move everything around with your hands, or use tongs to toss them in the bowl.
- If you would like, you can spray your air fryer basket with a little bit of cooking spray so the chicken doesn't stick. Carefully add the chicken legs to the air fryer in a single layer (this is important for even cooking and crispy skin).
- How long do drumsticks take in the air fryer? Air fry the chicken legs for 30 minutes at 380F, flipping halfway through. Add extra minutes if needed (see below). You want to make sure the internal temperature is 165F using a meat probe thermometer.

Tips from Jennifer's kitchen
- If your chicken legs aren’t getting crispy, it’s usually because the basket is too crowded. Give them a little space so the air can circulate around the skin.
- If you want extra crispy skin, let them go a few minutes longer past 165F. Chicken legs are very forgiving, and the higher temp helps render more fat from the skin.
- Patting the chicken dry before seasoning can also help with crispiness, especially if they’ve been sitting in packaging with a lot of moisture.
Frequently Asked Questions
The most common reason is overcrowding the basket. Make sure the chicken legs are in a single layer with space between them so the air can circulate.
Yes, but they won’t get as crispy. If cooking from frozen, add extra time and expect more moisture. For best results, thaw them first and pat them dry.
Yes, this is the same method I use for my air fryer chicken thighs. The timing is slightly different, but the seasoning and process are very similar.
How I build a simple plate with this
When I make these air fryer chicken legs, I don’t overthink the rest of the meal. I just build a simple plate around them and move on.
For a more filling side, my cauliflower casserole pairs really well with these chicken legs and keeps everything low carb. If I want something lighter, I’ll usually grab coleslaw or whatever fresh veggies I already have on hand.
For my family, I’ll add things like rice, potatoes, or rolls on the side. I keep my plate focused on protein and simple sides, and just adjust theirs as needed.
This is one of those meals that fits into real life. You don’t need a full plan, just a solid protein and a couple of easy sides.

I was glad to find a recipe that did not require a long marinate time, or the use of much oil. We usually only eat boneless skinless chicken breast, but I bought a six pack of chicken legs on sale, used this recipe, and it did not disappoint. The spices were spot on and the skin was crispy for my husband! We had two chicken legs left over, and the next day I ate them cold for lunch. So tasty! I will definitely be using this recipe again!

OMG. Perfect. I just purchased an Airfryer (thank you Prime Days). I didn’t know how it was going to go. I ave never used one before and sadly they no longer come with a direction booklet. I know however that Jennifer is always spot on. I love her recipes. I thought to myself, “i am going to make this if it kills me.”
I called to my hubby and informed him “ok, the chicken legs are ready.” He came up, said “wow they smell delicious.” I watch as he takes a bite, he smiled and said “oh these are a keeper.” That is what we end up writing on almost every recipe Jennifer has written. I can’t wait to try all of her other air fryer recipes. It was fast, tasty with a very easy clean up. Give it a try. Amazing. XOXO
