Keto Buttercream Frosting is the classic flavor we love, without all the carbs! This creamy, keto friendly frosting recipe is buttery with a hint of vanilla or chocolate perfection...so easy too!
Enough frosting to make a dozen cupcakes...this keto buttercream frosting cannot be beat. Want chocolate instead of simple vanilla? I'll show you how! This frosting is perfect for piping and the consistency is absolutely perfect.
HOW TO MAKE KETO BUTTERCREAM FROSTING
Buttercream frosting has always been one of my favorite frostings.
Now I can share with you this classic, creamy flavor we love...without all the carbs. The ingredients we needs for the vanilla version of this frosting are softened butter, powdered sweetener, heavy cream, a pinch of salt, and vanilla extract.
Lets get started!
Lets add the butter to a large bowl and mix using an electric mixer.
Beat the butter on the medium speed until smooth. (Alternatively, you can use a stand mixer with the paddle attachment). You want to beat the butter for atlas 3 minutes until the butter becomes lighter in color.
Okay, now lets add in the powdered sweetener and mix on low speed for one minute.
Then, increase the speed to medium and continue mixing for another minute or two.
Next you can add in the heavy cream, vanilla extract and salt.
Continue to mix using medium speed until the frosting is all combined.
And in 10 minutes prep time you can have a whipped cream, keto friendly frosting recipe!
Want a chocolate buttercream frosting? Simply add in ½ cup of sifted cocoa powder when you add in the powdered sweetener. If you frosting becomes too thick, add in a little more heavy cream until it becomes the consistency you like.

- Lakanto Powdered Sweetener: This is my favorite brand of low carb sweetener and you can find a link to the product below the recipe card. If you want to Use Swerve Powdered Sweetener, you would need to use a little less. Start with half the amount and add more if you think it needs to be sweeter.

Half of what to make it chocolate? Both places, the notes and in the text mentions adding 1/2 of cocoa powder with the powdered sugar. Am I correct to assume you mean 1/2 cup?
Jennifer Banz says
Yes, 1/2 cup. Thank you for bringing that to my attention!
Vickie S says
Is there supposed to be “cup” after “1/2” cocoa powder in the list of ingredients? I made the plain buttercream and it was outstanding and now I want to make the chocolate version! Thank you for this wonderful recipe.

Does this have to be refrigerated? I’m trying to find a keto cupcake recipe that doesn’t need refrigeration for an upcoming bake sale.
jenniferbanz says
Yes, I would refrigerate

I tried it yesterday it was delicious! I think I melted my butter too much so the icing was was very liquid. I put it in the freezer for a couple minutes it worked out ok. Didn’t matter how the frosting looked it was still delicious.
jenna says
can't figure out what i did wrong...my buttercream was tart (vanilla) and it formed a liquid that kept draining, making it impossible to spread or even really use.... not sure if my butter was no good??
jenniferbanz says
It sounds like it was over whipped

This just made my keto world!!!

I have granular Lakanto. Do you think it will work to powder it in my Vitamix? Also, I have used the Sweve before and my frosting was gritty. Any thoughts as to why and is this recipe gritty?
jenniferbanz says
yes, that should work!
Jane Saunders says
Just as simple and straightforward to make as regular buttercream - clever and well tasty.

For the chocolate buttercream frosting, I am not clear you add 1/2C cocoa powder
to a 1/2 C of powdered sugar? Or a 1/2C cocoa powder to 1C powder sugar? Please advise. Thank you!
jenniferbanz says
Add In the 1/2 cup sifted cocoa powder at the same time as the 1 cup or powdered sugar.
