This easy 4 ingredients keto hot chocolate recipe is ready in only 5 minutes. I use a combo of almond milk and heavy cream for the ultimate creamy hot chocolate treat. This recipe is also a sugar free hot chocolate and dairy free hot chocolate!
Who doesn't love a warm mug of hot chocolate on a cold day? This sugar free and keto hot chocolate is so easy to make! It is my family's go to hot chocolate recipe. Make it even more decadent by serving it with a dollop of whipped cream on top.
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for this keto hot chocolate recipe, what each one does in the recipe, and substitution options. For the printable recipe, see the recipe card below.
The ingredients for this recipe are unsweetened almond milk, heavy cream, cocoa powder, and keto friendly sweetener.
This combination of ingredients makes for a decadent hot chocolate, but not too decadent that it cannot be enjoyed regularly.
12 ounces unsweetened almond milk - You want to use an unsweetened almond milk to have this recipe be the lowest carbs possible. Almond milk is very low in carbs and calories. You could use vanilla or plain almond milk. Just make sure it is unsweetened.
4 ounces heavy cream - heavy cream combined with the almond milk is going to make this sugar free hot chocolate super creamy. If you need a dairy free version, you can use full fat unsweetened coconut milk.
2 tablespoons cocoa powder - I like to use Ghirardelli cocoa powder but that is a personal preference. Any cocoa powder will work.
2 tablespoons granular sweetener - My favorite granular sweetener is Lakanto.
How to make keto hot chocolate
This section explains how to make this sugar free hot chocolate recipe step by step. For a full printable recipe, see the recipe card below.
This recipe can be made easily on the stovetop or the microwave.
For the microwave, heat your almond milk and heavy cream in mugs for 90 seconds then simply stir in the cocoa powder and sweetener.
For the stovetop, heat your almond milk and heavy cream over medium heat until it is steaming, then whisk in the cocoa powder and sweetener.
Dairy free hot chocolate
This recipe uses almond milk which is dairy free, but we need to replace the heavy cream with canned, full fat coconut milk to make this recipe completely dairy free. You want to use canned, full fat coconut milk for the creamiest dairy free hot chocolate.
Tips for the best sugar free hot chocolate
- Be sure to heat the liquid before adding the cocoa powder. If you add cocoa powder to cold liquid, it will not incorporate.
- Use unsweetened almond milk for the least amount of carbs.
- Use coconut milk to make this recipe dairy free

This came out delicious! I did have to improvise because I didn't have cocoa powder or heavy cream. So I used sugar-free hot chocolate mix and almond milk whipped cream instead. Still came out amazing. I know it's almost spring but it's still freezing out here in Washington state and this is perfect for right now! God bless. ❤️
It's a lot of cream and the only way I'd use almond milk at all is Three Trees brand which is also organic or ma an even better idea is to make it yourself preferably from unpasteurized almonds. Same with only using organic cacao powder.

Well, good for you and thanks for sharing what you would do.
What's your website so we can see all that you would do?
Sounds a little elitist. You must have unlimited time and grocery budget. I also hope you realize that the process or pasteurization is heating and the almond milk would then be heated while your HOT chocolate is cooking.
The USDA requires all almonds to be pasteurized in the United States to reduce the risk of salmonella. Even almonds sold as raw are pasteurized.
Today is my birthday. I made this for myself instead of my usual shake and added some coffee. It is amazing! Great start to the day.
I love this hot chocolate. I also use the same
recipe in my Vitamix with ice and make a delicious keto chocolate smoothie!
Sooooo goood exactly what I was looking for.
Just had my first mug of your Keto hot chocolate made with unsweetened almond milk& some cream. It was delicious!! I added a bit more sweetener to suit my taste. I will be making this again for many of the upcoming winter evenings. Thanks for creating this that tastes soooo good!!
A great easy hot chocolate recipe that was satisfying to my taste buds. I added some keto friendly whipped topping to top it off. Delicious!
This is delicious! I made it with organic cacao powder rather than cocoa. Each cup of unsweetened almond milk is 8 carbs, not 1, though. Can't subtract sugar unless its sugar alcohol.
You are probably looking at the carbs in original almond milk. It has 8 carbs. Unsweetened has only 1 carb.
Delicious! I can now drink hot chocolate again. Thanks for a great recipe!
Simple and delicious! I had to add more lakanto Sweetener to taste but once I did this was delicious! Thank you!

Been looking for "sugar free" all natural hot chocolate. This is PERFECT! I mix dry ingredients together in a jar than take 2 Tbs for a single serving. Thank you for this recipe.
I just made this for the first time and love it. The only thing I will change next time is to make a paste with the cocoa and a little of the liquid then stir it in. The cocoa took some dissolving.

Absolutely love this! It is one of my go to drinks for winter and makes me feel like I am not missing anything....except the carbs. Thank you so much for keeping me sane during this crazy winter season. I also add a drop of peppermint essential oil for an extra hint of the holidays.
So happy to finally find a Keto Hot Chocolate that tastes deliciou! I have always added a pinch of cinnamon to our HC and did the same the second time I made this one and it was sooo good!
This was delicious....and not too sweet, just perfect and easy peasy to make. Thank you for the recipe!
Hi! Thank you for this recipe! Do you have a suggestion for an almond milk substitute?
Maybe oat milk or coconut milk
I'm always looking for a killer hot chocolate recipe and yours sounds divine! It looks just so luscious and creamy!
I've tried this with coconut milk, so I'm totally with you on the full fat coconut milk as a dairy free option! I think I add coconut milk to everything now and it's ridiculous how creamy it is and with chocolate, the height of decadence! Lol! Thanks for sharing!
