Ingredients needed
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for this keto hot chocolate recipe, what each one does in the recipe, and substitution options. For the printable recipe, see the recipe card below.
The ingredients for this recipe are unsweetened almond milk, heavy cream, cocoa powder, and keto friendly sweetener.
This combination of ingredients makes for a decadent keto hot chocolate, but not too decadent that it cannot be enjoyed regularly.
12 ounces unsweetened almond milk - You want to use an unsweetened almond milk to have this recipe be the lowest carbs possible. Almond milk is very low in carbs and calories. You could use vanilla or plain almond milk. Just make sure it is unsweetened. Alternatively you can use hot water to get a similar result.
4 ounces heavy whipping cream - heavy cream combined with the almond milk is going to make this sugar free hot chocolate super creamy. If you need a dairy free version of this hot beverage, you can use full fat unsweetened coconut milk.
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder - I like to use Ghirardelli regular cocoa powder but that is a personal preference. Any cocoa powder will work. You can use a dark chocolate powder for a more intense chocolate flavor.
2 tablespoons granular sweetener - My favorite brand of keto sweeteners is Lakanto which is a blend of erythritol and monk fruit sweetener. You can also use Swerve or allulose or your favorite sweetener. Add more or less sweetener to your hot cocoa to suit your own taste.
How to make keto hot chocolate
This section explains how to make this sugar free hot chocolate recipe step by step. For a full printable recipe, see the recipe card below.
This keto recipe can be made easily on the stovetop or the microwave.
For the microwave, heat your almond milk and heavy cream in mugs for 90 seconds then simply stir in the cocoa powder and sweetener.
For the stove top, In a small saucepan, heat your almond milk and heavy cream over medium heat until it is steaming, then whisk in the cocoa powder and sweetener. You could also use a milk frother. Pour into individual cups. Top with whipped heavy cream or coconut cream to make this even more decadent.
Dairy-free option
This recipe uses almond milk which is dairy free, but we need to replace the heavy cream with canned, full fat coconut milk to make this keto hot chocolate recipe completely dairy free. You want to use canned, full fat coconut milk for the creamiest dairy free hot chocolate. Other non-dairy milks you can use are oat milk and soy milk...they are not keto friendly, though.
Tips for the best sugar free hot chocolate
- Be sure to heat the liquid before adding the cocoa powder. If you add cocoa powder to cold liquid, it will not incorporate.
- Use unsweetened almond milk for the least amount of carbs.
- Use full-fat coconut milk n place of the heavy cream to make this recipe dairy free.
- Shave some real chocolate curls on top and keto marshmallows for a beautiful presentation.
Pre-made mix keto hot chocolate options
This creamy keto hot chocolate recipe is really quick to make, but sometimes we need something that is ready to go! Grocery stores carry sugar-free options but they are not keto friendly. There are lot's of sugar-free hot chocolate mix options online that are keto friendly. Here are a few:

Great!! Easy, quick and yummy!!

Great recipe! I used Dutch fat cocoa because I find it to be the richest, silkiest, creamiest cocoa and it dissolves well in liquid. I also used half heavy cream and half water as I didn’t have any other milks to use. Came out super creamy fatty and delicious.
Annabelle says
This came out delicious! I did have to improvise because I didn't have cocoa powder or heavy cream. So I used sugar-free hot chocolate mix and almond milk whipped cream instead. Still came out amazing. I know it's almost spring but it's still freezing out here in Washington state and this is perfect for right now! God bless. ❤️

It's a lot of cream and the only way I'd use almond milk at all is Three Trees brand which is also organic or ma an even better idea is to make it yourself preferably from unpasteurized almonds. Same with only using organic cacao powder.
Debbie H says
Well, good for you and thanks for sharing what you would do.
What's your website so we can see all that you would do?
jenniferbanz says
Sounds a little elitist. You must have unlimited time and grocery budget. I also hope you realize that the process or pasteurization is heating and the almond milk would then be heated while your HOT chocolate is cooking.
Lucy says
The USDA requires all almonds to be pasteurized in the United States to reduce the risk of salmonella. Even almonds sold as raw are pasteurized.

Today is my birthday. I made this for myself instead of my usual shake and added some coffee. It is amazing! Great start to the day.

Just had my first mug of your Keto hot chocolate made with unsweetened almond milk& some cream. It was delicious!! I added a bit more sweetener to suit my taste. I will be making this again for many of the upcoming winter evenings. Thanks for creating this that tastes soooo good!!
Erica says
A great easy hot chocolate recipe that was satisfying to my taste buds. I added some keto friendly whipped topping to top it off. Delicious!
Joan says
This is delicious! I made it with organic cacao powder rather than cocoa. Each cup of unsweetened almond milk is 8 carbs, not 1, though. Can't subtract sugar unless its sugar alcohol.
Jodi says
You are probably looking at the carbs in original almond milk. It has 8 carbs. Unsweetened has only 1 carb.
Carol says
Delicious! I can now drink hot chocolate again. Thanks for a great recipe!
Debbie says
Simple and delicious! I had to add more lakanto Sweetener to taste but once I did this was delicious! Thank you!

Been looking for "sugar free" all natural hot chocolate. This is PERFECT! I mix dry ingredients together in a jar than take 2 Tbs for a single serving. Thank you for this recipe.
Rita says
I just made this for the first time and love it. The only thing I will change next time is to make a paste with the cocoa and a little of the liquid then stir it in. The cocoa took some dissolving.
Tiffany Laney says
Absolutely love this! It is one of my go to drinks for winter and makes me feel like I am not missing anything....except the carbs. Thank you so much for keeping me sane during this crazy winter season. I also add a drop of peppermint essential oil for an extra hint of the holidays.

I've tried this with coconut milk, so I'm totally with you on the full fat coconut milk as a dairy free option! I think I add coconut milk to everything now and it's ridiculous how creamy it is and with chocolate, the height of decadence! Lol! Thanks for sharing!
